This year’s show may provide some insights into the state of the bike business as well as the usual gamut of sideshow activities. Should be quite the scene as always!

Full show rundown and schedule.

A collection of newsy stuff from around the bicycle globe.

Seattle’s Cascade Bicycle Club has rated the region’s 10 biggest suburban cities for bike-friendliness: Kirkland, Redmond, Renton, Everett, Tacoma, Bellevue, Auburn, Kent, Federal Way, and Shoreline. More on Cascade’s blog.

In San Francisco we used to call bike lanes “double-park lanes.” Cars used them almost as much as bikes. That’s pretty much true everywhere. But Brookline MA has decided to try to put an end to it with a $50 fine. As they say in S.F., which has a $100 fine against bike-lane parking, Good luck with that!

In Los Angeles, where they don’t even have bike lanes, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa held a first-ever bike summit after he was knocked off his bike and required 8 screws to patch together his right elbow. Good idea. LA cyclists were all over the mayor.

A New Hampshire guy wants to set the world hour record for a wheelie. Guess how far he plans to ride on that back wheel in an hour, then click here to see if you’re in the ballpark.

The story behind Floyd Landis’ $5 bike.

The story behind Precious, the fundraising cross-country bike with real-time Web connectivity.

Whistler Crankworx’s impact on the B.C. economy: More than 100,000 visitors, $10 million. Most notably, mountain biking at Whistler has eclipsed that other extreme Canadian sport, golf.

Meanwhile, Oakridge OR is banking on mountain biking for its own local stimulus package.

Early heads up: S.F. Bike Expo, one of our favorites, is returning to the Cow Palace Saturday, November 6th.

Congrats to Sheila Moon and her clothing line, moving from Oakland to Emeryville (IKEA-land) with a third more square footage. New address: 5900 Hollis Street, Unit T2. Check it out!

Tomorrow is the big SF Bike Expo at the Cow Palace. Since along with the jump competition and usual eye candy there’s a killer swap meet, I will be a lighter cyclist in the wallet this time tomorrow. Also, they just announced Cove Bikes will be showing up. Back in the day I’d hang out at Cove before tackling NorthShore stuff — this was when they had the station wagon from the seminal MTB film, “Tread,” out front. Cool folks then, still are. Some of them may even be at the Expo! Schedule here.

How do you shoot at someone’s head, come an inch from murdering them, and walk away with just a 120-day sentence? As DrunkCyclist explains, you do it by making sure the person you’re shooting at is riding a bike. If I’m not mistaken, DC is studying the law, so his deconstruction makes for edifying reading.

And in other anti-cycling news, David Zabriskie makes it easy for cyclists to put in a bad word for the Los Angeles physician recently convicted of intentionally injuring cyclists by jamming his car to a stop in front of them. The physician reportedly is gathering lots of letters of commendation; let’s counter with letters of condemnation. “The District Attorney’s Office is collecting these statements in support of the cyclists,” Zabriskie’s “Yield to Life” site notes. “She plans to submit the letters with the motion at the end of next week so we encourage you to submit a letter to her in a timely fashion so that she can include it in her packet to the judge.” All you have to do is click.

Just 6 days away: The annual Fairfax CA Turkey Day ride, or “Appetite Seminar.” Last year there were hundreds of mountain bikers climbing all over the hills, and this year’s weather forecast looks smashing. Never to be missed. See you there!

Robb at Mountain Biking by 198 interviews the venerable, the humble, the august, the acclaimed Joe Breeze.

Coming up: SF Bike Expo on Saturday, Nov. 21st. Just added: Dirt-jump competition! What’s more is the platinum list of competitors, drawing heavily on the nearby Aptos (Santa Cruz) Mafia of Jump Jivers like Greg Watts (winner of the past summer’s Whistler Crankworx slopestyle competition), Tyler & Cam McCaul, Paul Basagoitia (only walk-on winner of Crankworx ever), Mike Montgomery, Andrew Taylor and others.

Should be quite the show. More here.

Also coming up: Tyler Farrar, the best pro sprinter the U.S. has produced in two decades, will be at a Cascade Bicycle Club “Evening With” at 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday, Nov. 18, in Magnuson Park Theater (7110 62nd Ave. N.E.). Get a discount on the $15 tickets by ordering with code CBC Member (if you are one!).

Cyclelicio.us: Is bike sharing coming to Silicon Valley?

New World Disorder 10, “Dust and Bones,” is now available on iTunes, which is where I hope “Race Across the Sky,” the Leadville 100 epic, soon winds up, because I can’t seem to carve out the time to go to an actual theater and watch it.

RC posts his $.02 on siping mountain bike tires. My rear Nevi is a little worn around the lugs. I’ll give RC’s advice a whirl and see what happens. My gut tells me that siping won’t affect tire longevity simply because if you’re siping you’re undoubtedly riding a lot, and riding a lot is what wears out tires, siped or unsiped.

I’ve long compared mountain biking to meditation, especially to my long-suffering spouse, in an effort to communicate its transportive dimension. Not sure what to make of the Bicycle Meditations site, but if you’re into this sort of thing, here it is.
