Not a huge ride today, although the weather was again unexpectedly mild. In the Northwest, “mild” means some sunshine came out and it got above 50. I dropped down Fremont Ave. to the Burke-Gilman Trail and tooled around the north end of Lake Union, winding up over in Montlake. The Montlake Bike Shop is a [...]

Bad stuff happens: “TASMANIA Police are investigating an incident where a female mountain bike rider received injuries after hitting a wire that had been deliberately strung between two trees.” There was a similar incident in Marin last year. The local newspaper picked up on it, and it became a rallying point for mountain biking trail [...]

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flNLNpv7LUo&hl=en&fs=1]So I’m a mountain biker, right? Why wouldn’t I want to watch Kelly Saunders riding in the Elk Mountains? I watch tons of videos on YouTube and Vimeo and bike blogs, and they’re not really all that professionally done or even creative. So yeah, bring me an ad with a bike and it just might [...]

Well my opinion of Miley Cyrus has gone up. She and boyfriend ride to yoga class in Toluca Lake CA (not LA as the article states), and that can’t be bad. (Actually I’ve never had an opinion, having never heard her sing or anything else, so perhaps I should say, my opinion has been formed!) [...]

We’re entering into the 2009 bicycling season on a roll (so to speak!), with lots of talk about cyclist’s rights and trails access. The past week several data points passed our desk, including opening more trails on Tiger Mountain trail, PUMP’s newfound activism in Portland, Iowa legislation strengthening cycling awareness and safety, and Dave Wiens’ [...]

Co-founder and longtime fixture at the Downhill Zone Darren Brown is leaving to do other things, primarily contractor work, having sold the shop to Adam Schaeffer. Most of the “The Zone” will be pretty much the same, said Adam, who’s been wrenching with Darren for five years. Red-headed Adam’s hilarious riffs on everything from Jon [...]

Dave Wiens, the former mountain bike racer who currently specializes in distance competition and kicked Lance Armstrong’s ass at last year’s grueling Leadville 100, weighs in on bike advocacy after the latest Outside magazine’s profile on him: “The bottom line here in the Gunnison Valley today is that trail users, including our freeriding community, and [...]

You hate to see this from a trusted, respected brand. Salsa in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling Taiwan-made stems, the failure one of which resulted in a broken wrist. Three reports of breakage were investigated. CromotoStem has the full list of affected stems. About 8,600 units were produced. The second mountain [...]

BikeRadar has the scoop. Some highlights: A single-lever, double-tap shifter setup similar to the road system. Smaller cage options (medium and short), given the reduced chainring capacity. Possibly carbon crank arms. Chainring teeth options speculated include 26/39, 28/42 and 30/44T. Cassette options: 11-32, 11-34, 11-36T. Bipartite rotors, alloy spider, steel donut. Here’s the visual:
