What a shame. But Brent Thomson leaves a huge legacy, one that we’ll be reminded of every time we slam the challenging desert rock of Bootleg Canyon. Maybe time to rename it in his honor?

I’ve been riding Tiger Mountain almost as long as I’ve been riding mountain bikes, which extends back to 1991. It always fascinates me to see how the mountain changes, with new wrinkles at every turn. I’ve been gone in California for three months, so today when the sun came out it was time to hit […]

Because only slackers need the support of a whole team… Registration opens Feb. 24th for this exercise in self-punishment. Only 400 spots open, so you’d better jump on it fast. I’ve never raced this event but have a friend whose friend did it practically solo when the rest of the team disintegrated on her. That […]

I go just about everywhere in Seattle by bike, even in the rain. So for today’s downtown meeting I’ll be riding my trusty Titus titanium hardtail down Aurora, across the Aurora Bridge, then dropping to Dexter and making my way through the trecherous one-way maze of downtown Seattle. Yes I ride Aurora (Hwy. 99) because […]

Bike magazine updates previously reported intervention by Obama administration to stop oil drilling plans near Moab, Utah. Moab, an acronym for “mountain on a bike,” is one of the known galaxy’s premier mountain biking meccas, of course. Somehow riding around oil derricks might detract from its allure. You have to love the monkeywrencher who put […]

Went out into the woods for a ride Jim likes to call “classic Northwest urban winter trail, where you go round in circles for hours.” Lake Sawyer is just outside of Black Diamond on the Maple Valley-Black Diamond road. We got completely lost but spent 3 hours in the saddle having a great time trying […]

Just a week to go to the annual swap-o-rama on Saturday (Feb. 21) at Magnuson Park, sponsored this year by Seattle’s marvelous Cascade Bicycle Club. Come early (doors open around 9 a.m., I say “around” because they never seem to be quite on time), because there’s always a long loonnnnggggg line. (Or come around 9:30 […]

LA Times: “Although cyclists are known for staying on top of their training heart rate zones and pedal cadence, increasing research suggests they should also pay attention to their risk of thinning bones.” Add osteopenia to the list of reasons to mountain bike instead of road ride. (I took up mountain biking partly because road […]

Check it out: guy has a home-made boom cam attached in front of his helmet with wide-angle lens on camcorder/camera. It’s interesting largely because it’s different, I think. Wouldn’t want to watch many videos this way but it is a unique (!) perspective. Thanks to BikeRadar.com. For my mountain biking videos, go to YouTube here.
