SeattlePI.com: “With a $225,000 state trips-reduction grant, organizers handed out 200 free bikes, some gear and training lessons. About 265 people, who enlisted through 25 employers from King County, joined the program, which began last August.” Seattle Times: New bike racks in downtown Bellevue. Believe it or not, bike rack shortages are the single most [...]

San Francisco bike policy is picking up momentum. Mayor Gavin Newsom, a true progressive who’s running for governor, is a big bike booster. The city Planning Commission and MTA (Municipal Transportation Agency) just gave thumbs up to the SF Bike Plan, prompting this observation from Newsom: “Already 6% of our commuters are bicyclists; that’s more [...]

The Cascade Bicycle Club’s victory in the Burke-Gilman “missing link” case today represents something big for the cycling community. Cyclists are used to losing in cases like this. Used to losing in court when it comes to a motorist’s or cop’s word against theirs. Used to losing bike lanes, as on Stone Way North, in [...]

BikePortland.org: Portland to add “buffered” bike lanes aimed at increasing cyclist elbow room in traffic. Interesting stuff. I’d like to ride one to get a feel, but it does look like this helps address (besides what’s mentioned in the article) the “dooring” problem of having to ride out into a lane of traffic to avoid [...]

Cascade Bicycle Club in partnership with standout Web community-builder Phil Mitchell has inaugurated a group Web site (mashup) to track bike hazards, thefts and accidents. The aim is to alert the cycling community and city authorities to problem areas with the hope that something can be done to ameliorate them. The site is called Bikewise.org. [...]

Perhaps it’s mere coincidence, but I found pregnant symbolism in the announcement that Jim Vesely, head of The Seattle Times editorial page, will retire on Bike to Work Day. Vesely is no friend to cyclists. He opposed bike trail funding in Bellevue and, more infamously, championed an annual fee on cyclists in King County — [...]

Lance/Astana soap opera silences for now: Apparently Lance’s public squawking freed up some funding for the Giro d’Italia leg of Astana’s season. As far as the Tour de France goes, stay tuned…on Universal Sports channel, which will carry the Giro after all. Another city adjusts to increased bike traffic: Vancouver BC is winnowing vehicular traffic [...]

The last-minute bike legislation keeps rolling in: Wisconsin passed a “dooring” law that will aid cyclists by clarifying lack of liability in a dooring incident and enabling cyclists to press for damages in court. Washington has a law governing dooring, albeit not explicitly in cycling cases. Good discussion on the Cascade Bicycle Club board, thanks [...]
