Houston Chronicle: The father of a driver accused of killing two bicyclists last summer urged Texas Gov. Rick Perry to veto a bike-safety “3-feet-please” bill. Perry did veto the legislation, although it’s unclear how much impact the father’s views had. Perry broke his collarbone riding a mountain bike recently, so it’s not like he’s anti-bike [...]

In the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, a car driver took out two cyclists in a classic dooring incident. I was just thinking the other day how lucky I am never to have gotten doored. Then I almost got doored twice in three days… (Thanks to MyBallard.com) In Ottawa, a minivan took out 5 cyclists in [...]

I didn’t know Bruce Rosar, but the overwhelming response to his death has caught all of our attention. Bruce was an experienced cyclist, a tireless advocate for cycling and a safety instructor. A car mowed him down in Apex, North Carolina. Police took a statement from the driver, who said Bruce made a wrong turn. [...]

This Day in Doping: Lance Armstrong will be “particularly monitored” for doping violations throughout the Tour. Not that monitoring “particularly works,” given the rampant abuses, but the UCI wants to at least keep up appearances. The “particularly monitored” Tom Boonen was kicked out of this year’s tour for cocaine use, then reinstated. (Rightly so, since [...]

Update: Turns out the last rider mentioned hailed from Oregon. BikePortland.org has the details. A bad 4th of July run-up for cyclists: In Seattle, a cyclist was hit and killed on Dexter, the major north-south bike conduit in the city, clearly marked with wide bike lanes in both directions. Police took driver in for alcohol [...]

DrunkCyclist updates a Biker Down thread and legal test of 3-feet-please in Arizona. This is one to watch. See comments section as well. Key line: “He may not have meant to do what he did, but he is still responsible.” BikePortland.org riffs on USA Today piece on Google’s move to put bike paths on Streetview. [...]

BikePortland.org: Portland to add “buffered” bike lanes aimed at increasing cyclist elbow room in traffic. Interesting stuff. I’d like to ride one to get a feel, but it does look like this helps address (besides what’s mentioned in the article) the “dooring” problem of having to ride out into a lane of traffic to avoid [...]

Broken collarbone: “It has never happened before, I feel very disappointed,” he told reporters as he left the hospital. “I feel miserable right now so I have to relax a few days.” This could jeopardize his Tour, but maybe not. He wasn’t going to win anyway. A break like this usually takes 4 to 6 [...]

ElectricBike: “Japan Electric Bicycles Booming” Battery technology is leading the way, but the high price of fuel is pushing it along too. Top drivers: Delivery services and rental firms. Cannondale is recalling road bikes lacking spoke protectors. Doesn’t seem like that big a deal but there you have it. The law’s the law… Bicycle Times, [...]
